Abstract

Anemia is one of the major complications in patients with chronic renal disease and plays an important role for weakness and disability in these patients.therefore, treatment of anemic disorder parallel with hemodialysis play an effective role in improvement of health in such patients.the aim of this study was to evaluate the iron status and effects of iron supplement on the hematological factors in hemodialysis patients which were chosen at random from hospitals in Tehran.the individuals in this study were divided into 2 groups:a test group consisting of 33 persons(receiving an iron supplement) and a control group with 35 persons(without iron supplement).the average lenght of hemodialysis in the patients was 45+_34 momths.the total average of daily iron intake was 121+_3.5 mg,and 8.3+_4.1mg in test and control group respectively.their hemoglobin levels in test and control group were 8.9+_1.6g/dl, and 8.1+_1.5g/dl, respectively and the difference was statistically significant(p<0.05).serum iron level in test and control group were 100+_52,and 54.7+_39mg/dl respectively.serum iron in control was statistically lower than the test group(p<0.05).the transferine saturation in the test group (52+_25%) was significantly higher than the control group(34.3+_19%)(p<0.01).the average of RBC and MCV in the test group(3.5+_0.5.10/mm, 81.8+_3.9) were significantly higher than the control group,(3.1+_0.5.10, 78.9+_4.3)(p<0.05, 0.005 respectively).in general,we can conclude that usage of iron supplement can be effevtive in the treatment of anemia in these patioents.
