Abstract

Background: Sexual function is one of the most important aspects of life that is likely to be affected as the side effects of antihypertensive drugs in its users. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of propranolol and prazosin on the sexual performance of female Three Spot Gourami.

Methods: In this study, 84 female Three Spot Gourami fish were randomly divided into 7 separate groups including the control and 6 groups injected with prazosin and/or propranolol in different doses of 1, 2 and 4 mg/kg during twenty days. Finally, the histological morphology of the ovaries and sexual hormones level in the experimental groups were examined.

Results: Our experiments showed a change in the oocytes stage into cortical and vitellogenesis in treated groups. Also, sexual hormone levels increased in propranolol and prazosin exposed groups in comparison to controls. Gonadosomatic index had same trend with hormonal changes, while the weight and length of fish didn't alter comparing between different groups.

Conclusions: Our findings indicated that propranolol and prazosin with mentioned doses and treatment duration had a positive effect on sexual function of female Three Spot Gourami fish.
