Abstract
Introduction: The worldwide prevalence of asthma among adolescents marks it as their most common chronic disease, with the capacity to negatively influence them. The present study aimed to investigate the relationships among quality of life, spiritual intelligence, and hope in adolescents with asthma.
Methods: This study employed a descriptive correlational research design and was conducted with 300 adolescents with asthma, selected through convenience sampling. Three instruments, the “Pediatric Asthmatic Quality of Life Questionnaire”, “the Spiritual Intelligence Self-Report Inventory”, and the “Adolescent Hope Scale”, were used. All the data were analyzed using SPSS version 22. The statistical methods applied in this study included the independent samples t-test, Pearson and/or Spearman correlation, and ANOVA.
Results: Adolescents with chronic asthma reported a moderate quality of life, good spiritual intelligence, and a moderate level of hope. There is a non-significant correlation between research variables, hope, spiritual intelligence, and its dimensions (Critical Existential Thinking, Expansion of Consciousness and Production of Personal Meaning), but there is a significant correlation with Transcendental Awareness (TA) (p-value=0.007). Also, a significant correlation appeared between Quality of life and Spiritual Intelligence and its dimensions (P<0.05), and no significant correlation was found between quality of life and hope (p-value= 0.206).
Conclusion: The results indicated a positive relationship between spiritual intelligence and quality of life. While causal inferences cannot be made, these findings highlight the potential relevance of spiritual intelligence in supporting adolescents’ quality of life, and future interventions may explore this direction.
