Abstract
Introduction: Tooth eruption is a multifactorial physiological process affected by both local and systemic conditions. This study used panoramic radiographs to investigate the relationship between pulp treatment of primary molars and eruption of the permanent premolars in children aged 10-12 years in Kerman, Iran.
Methods: In this retrospective cross-sectional study, 47 panoramic radiographs from children aged 10-12 years were examined. Each radiograph included a primary molar that had received pulp treatment in one quadrant, while the corresponding contralateral quadrant served as the control. On each side, the distance from the cusp tip of the developing permanent premolar to the alveolar crest was measured using AutoCAD and compared between treated and control sites. Data were analyzed with SPSS version 26 using the paired-samples t-test, Wilcoxon signed-rank test, chi-square test, Fisher’s exact test, and multivariable linear regression. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05.
Results: The permanent tooth bud was positioned closer to the alveolar crest on the treated side than on the control side. The mean difference in distance between treated and control sides was 0.45 mm when all teeth were considered, compared with 0.30 mm among successfully treated teeth and 0.62 mm among unsuccessfully treated teeth. No significant association was found between the measured distance and tooth type, jaw, or side of treatment.
Conclusion: The distance between the permanent tooth bud and the alveolar crest was significantly reduced on the treated side compared with the control side. This finding may indicate an association between pulp treatment of primary molars and earlier eruption of the corresponding permanent premolars.
